The hive above over-wintered just fine. The trick is leaving honey (~ 40 lbs.) for them to move up through during winter.

If honey is too far away (even a few inches) they starve, or freeze.
Snow is rare here, only a day or two per year, if that.

By April, or the first temperature above 50, the girls come out for a potty break. They like to keep the house clean and will just hold it until they can get outside.

The porch gets crowded about that time.
